I received my weekly email from Chris Brogan at Human Business Works, which always has something to keep me going as a small business owner. This week the title was “Innovation Isn’t Only for Steve Jobs.” The summary of the article was that you need to keep reinventing, challenging yourself, and changing the way you do things in order to keep up and keep ahead of the competition. When I started the Modern Jen brand, I didn’t have a clear vision of how or what I was going to accomplish, but I knew I needed to do something. So I started. Since 2010, when my vision was first born, I have gone from selling books to individuals, to organizing stock images from different companies, to creating and selling stock images (some of which I will continue), to what this brand is ultimately becoming, which is wholesale guest books and branded journals. The reinventing came when my ideas hit walls! Whether the walls were production challenges, time out-of-pocket challenges, money out-of-pocket challenges or whatever. I had to rethink where I was going out of necessity to keep my idea of owning a business and selling a product alive. What a great reminder that there isn’t only one way to do things. Dead ends aren’t always dead ends if you learn how to turn, jump or climb!
